Stillife after Caravaggio. A genius. Perhaps perverse in some ways. Invented or at least defined "Chiarascuro" (dark images with bright passages). This image from a slide is all that survives. The original was given away. This is where I learned the importance of the surrounding background. The original Caravaggio is of surpassing beauty. This was painted using the Max Dörner method of alternating egg-oil tempera with oil colors. Great brilliance and color depth can be obtained. |
