Sampson and Delilah after Rubens. Oil on Panel. This is a nearly finished copy of a small oil-on-panel modello which Peter Paul Rubens prepared for a prospective client. I much preferred it to the large finished painting. I more or less feel that way about all of Rubens' modellos. They are all in his own hand and sketched while the inspiration was fresh.
The modello hangs in the Cincinnati Museum of Art. When I saw it fifteen years ago it hung loose in a dilapidated frame, quite ignored and unappreciated. I thought it was the best thing they had.
