Head of Carl

This is Carl Oleson, whom Judy and I spent much time with in the '80's. Then Carl got married and became busier. He and Judy worked together and we got together for lunch and occasionally dinner.

This drawing was preliminary to an oil painting which never satisfied and has not survived. It's strange, but sometimes the best work appears in the first stages, where perhaps inspiration and concentration are greatest. There are also technical problems in oil painting that make "inspiration" more or less beside the point.
